Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations require that a qualified trustee or custodian hold IRA assets on behalf of the IRA owner. The increased investment options available in self-directed IRAs prompted the SEC to issue a public notice in 2011 due an increased risk of fraud in alternative assets. Some examples of these alternative investments are real estate, private mortgages, private company stock, oil and gas limited partnerships, precious metals, digital assets, horses and livestock, and intellectual property. Gold is just one option among many for retirement investors who use self-direction. Even tax liens can be valid retirement investments, for example. Unlike traditional IRAs that limit investment options to stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, a Self-Directed IRA allows individuals to invest in alternative assets such as gold, silver, real estate, private equity, and more. This means that any gains from gold investments can grow without being subject to immediate taxation, allowing investors to potentially accumulate wealth more efficiently over time.Īmerican IRA also emphasized that investing in gold through a Self-Directed IRA provides investors with greater control and diversification opportunities. By utilizing a Self-Directed IRA, investors can take advantage of the tax-deferred or tax-free growth that comes with this retirement account structure. After all, that’s why investors use retirement accounts in the first place. And while it’s not necessary to include 100% gold in an IRA-investors can include all sorts of different asset classes within a Self-Directed IRA-many who use a “Gold IRA” can hold a significant amount if desired.Īccording to the post, one of the key benefits of investing in gold within a Self-Directed IRA is the potential for tax advantages that come with retirement accounts. Many view gold as a way to hedge against inflation, or to add stability to a portfolio. For example, gold is an asset with a long history of retaining its purchasing power. In the post, American IRA highlighted some reasons investors can include gold in an IRA in the first place. That’s why a recent post at American IRA aimed to demystify the process of gold investing with a Self-Directed IRA, explaining how investors can put money in precious metals that falls under the umbrella of a tax-protected retirement account. Jasper weather tomorrow celsius9/17/2023 You won't get lost - just walk on the trail and follow the sign (see photo #11). It is part of the 440-km long Hume & Hovell Walking Track, and is sign-posted all the way to Mt Wee Jasper. The trail starts at the west side of the picnic area. Tyrone Thomas, in his book, says it would take 6 hours 30 minutes with minimal break. Must make a mental note to take along more water in similar conditions in the future.ġ0:27 0.0 km - Start at Fitzpatrick trackheadġ3:47 7.8 km - Reach Mt Wee Jasper Summit after 3 hrs 20 mins of walkingġ7:07 15.6 km - Return to car - 2 hrs 30 mins of walkingĪs it is a hot day, hence we are not as fast as we would like. By the time we return to the car, not a drop is left. Tyrone Thomas in his book "120 Walks in NSW", has a chapter describing this walk. Our recorded trail can be downloaded from: The route is Hume & Hovell Walking Track to Mt Wee Jasper. The start of the walk is at the west side of the picnic area. The trackhead is a picnic and camping ground, with barbecue and toilet facilities. (Photo #1 below is taken near that bridge.) We park the car at Fitzpatrick Trackhead which is about 4 km south of Wee Jasper Bridge over the Goodradigbee River. Hence it is a gain of 731 meters to the top, not a height to sneer at. So from Canberra, we drive 125km west towards Yass to avoid the rain, and climb Mt Wee Jasper instead. Only Tania and I are still enthusiastic to spend the day outdoors. Unfortunately, a bad weather forecast spoiled the adventure and the climb was cancelled the day before. Short story writing prompts9/16/2023 UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF WRITING PROMPTS They can then highlight in the appropriate color accordingly. Students can work their way through the list of prompts, discussing and identifying the situation and directions in each. Provide each pair with a list of various writing prompts and two different colored highlighter pens. To help students analyze writing prompts, and to recognize the situation and directions within a writing prompt, organize students into pairs of talking partners. With careful reflection and skilful composition, writing prompts can inspire students to want to put pen to paper, even on the most apparently uninspiring of topics. The best writing prompts are designed in such a way that they stimulate students to want to express themselves. This task may require the student to perform a single step or a series of steps. The directions will lay out what the student is expected to do in their writing. It should be something that inspires them to respond in words, rather than freeze in fear.ĭirections, in the context of a writing prompt, refer to the actual writing task itself. Either way, the description should be within the students’ broad sphere of knowledge or experience. This may be dictated by the course material, in the case of exams for example, or be a situation designed to pique the students’ interest and to encourage them to write in an imaginative or creative way. In a writing prompt, the situation presents to the students the general subject or topic that they will be writing about. However, the most effective writing prompts are just a little bit more complex than that.įirstly, there are two fundamental elements of most effective writing prompts, namely the situation and the accompanying directions. In their simplest form, a writing prompt may take the form of a basic question. To achieve either of these, however, it is essential to first examine exactly what writing prompts are and how they work. Later in this article, we will look at ways to generate our own writing prompts, as well as some strategies for us to help our students to effectively unpack writing prompts. Luckily, this is exactly what writing prompts are for they are designed to engage the interest of our students, with the intention of spurring them to write in a creative and reflective manner. In situations such as these, we need to be able to offer our students some effective means of kick-starting their writing engines. At times, nothing can seem quite as daunting as that virginal sheet of paper accompanied with instructions to write x amount of words on it. Our students too are no strangers to this experience when the empty page itself stands like a wall between their conscious and subconscious. Essentially a fear of the unknown, we often refer to this phenomenon as writer’s block. Best dim sum los angeles jonathan gold9/16/2023 Seemed to be ample street parking available and all was free looked like.By now most Chinese food lovers have made a pilgrimage to Shanghai No. We had parked several blocks away bc we were there to walk around Chinatown so wasn’t an issue for us. Their dim sum menu didn’t have any price on it so we just asked. Staff were efficient and attentive - not overly warm or friendly - just very businesslike- but we were well taken care of just the same. It was super windy and all their plates, cups and utensils are paper now so it was challenging keeping things from flying around. When we arrived it didn’t look like they were allowing indoor seating - but when we paid the check, lots of tables were full inside - so maybe ask when you go if you don’t want to sit outside. They had both indoor and outdoor seating - but that wasn’t apparent. The orders of each were pretty standard sizes for dim sum - 3 or 4 pieces each - way more than we could eat in one sitting! We loved them all! There was a tad too much crust on the egg tarts, but that’s just my personal preference. We tried the Sui Mai, Har Gow, shrimp roll, turnip cakes (always a fave!), beef balls, shrimp and leek dumpling - and no dim sum experience would be complete without egg tarts of course!Īll the items were cooked perfectly and full of lovely flavor. It’s $3.30 for each order of any of the dim sum items. They have a huge menu but we went for their smaller dim sum menu - which is a pretty good deal as well. but was in paper cups so I was disappointed about that. They always start with the customary hot tea which was lovely. Great place to refuel with some dim sum while walking around Chinatown…their food was excellent imo! Good location too - just outside the main area with the two gates. I'll never return, I'll be driving out to Alhambra for some dim sum next time. This is just lazy - and frankly, charging for this is almost a crime. They'd been cooked and kept warm somewhere, the bases had no crispness, the dough limp and thick, the filling heavy and not hot. The pot stickers were a crime to humanity. We got an order of veggies with garlic, and instead of bright, vibrant looking veggies with a 'wok hei' taste, these were older and yellower looking, and although a good portion - not a lot of taste. This has to be just sitting under hot lamps. Nothing was fresh, nothing had just been steamed of fried. then the turnip cake was tepid, then the har gow was just warm. The food arrived, and the first thing we noticed were the spring rolls were cold. No carts anymore, so everything is ordered off a checklist. Today we returned as a family and it was utterly dreadful, some of the worst dim sum I've had (and I've had bad). I see this is the first review since 2021 - and I visited this place last year, and it wasn't too bad. Anti mog myelitis9/16/2023 Even if assays with high specificity (≥99%) are used, true-positive (TP) results can easily be outnumbered by false-positive (FP) results if the prevalence of a marker is low and the number of samples tested is high. However, screening of large unselected populations for rare biomarkers generally decreases the positive predictive value of diagnostic tests by increasing the rate of false-positive results. Therefore, increasing numbers of patients with suspected or established MS are currently being screened for MOG-IgG. However, such misclassification has potential therapeutic implications: (a) similar to what has been observed in AQP4-IgG-positive NMOSD, some drugs approved for MS might be ineffective or even harmful in MOG-EM owing to differences in immunopathogenesis (b) MOG-EM is associated with a high risk of flare-ups after cessation of steroid treatment for acute attacks and may thus require close monitoring and careful steroid tapering and (c) patients positive for MOG-IgG might be particularly responsive to antibody-depleting treatments for acute attacks such as plasma exchange or immunoadsorption, to B cell-targeted long-term therapies such as rituximab, to treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) (especially in children ), and to immunosuppressive treatments. Accordingly, many patients with MOG-EM were falsely classified as having MS in the past. Importantly, however, MOG-EM and MS show a relevant phenotypic, i.e., clinical as well as radiological, overlap : like MS, MOG-EM follows a relapsing course in most cases, at least in adults, and 33 and 15% of adult patients with MOG-EM meet McDonald’s and Barkhof’s criteria for MS, respectively, at least once over the course of disease. īased on evidence from (a) immunological studies suggesting a direct pathogenic impact of MOG-IgG, (b) neuropathological studies demonstrating discrete histopathological features, (c) serological studies reporting a lack of aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-IgG in almost all MOG-IgG-positive patients, and (d) cohort studies suggesting differences in clinical and paraclinical presentation, treatment response and prognosis, MOG-IgG is now considered to denote a disease entity in its own right, distinct from classic MS and from AQP4-IgG-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), which is now often referred to as MOG-IgG-associated encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM). While antibodies to MOG were originally thought to be involved in multiple sclerosis (MS), based on results from enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays employing linearized or denatured MOG peptides as antigen, more recent studies using new-generation cell-based assays have demonstrated a robust association of antibodies to full-length, conformationally intact human MOG protein with (mostly recurrent) optic neuritis (ON), myelitis and brainstem encephalitis, as well as with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)-like presentations, rather than with classic MS. Over the past few years, the role of immunoglobulin G serum antibodies to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG) in patients with inflammatory CNS demyelination has been revisited. Finally, we provide recommendations regarding assay methodology, specimen sampling and data interpretation. In addition, we give a list of conditions atypical for MOG-EM (“red flags”) that should prompt physicians to challenge a positive MOG-IgG test result. In this paper, we propose indications for MOG-IgG testing based on expert consensus. To lessen the hazard of overdiagnosing MOG-EM, which may lead to inappropriate treatment, more selective criteria for MOG-IgG testing are urgently needed. However, screening of large unselected cohorts for rare biomarkers can significantly reduce the positive predictive value of a test. Accordingly, increasing numbers of patients with suspected or established MS are currently being tested for MOG-IgG. Owing to a substantial overlap in clinicoradiological presentation, MOG-EM was often unwittingly misdiagnosed as MS in the past. Most experts now consider MOG-IgG-associated encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM) a disease entity in its own right, immunopathogenetically distinct from both classic multiple sclerosis (MS) and aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-IgG-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). Over the past few years, new-generation cell-based assays have demonstrated a robust association of autoantibodies to full-length human myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG) with (mostly recurrent) optic neuritis, myelitis and brainstem encephalitis, as well as with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)-like presentations.
